Tony’s television credits include multiple episodes of the following miniseries: DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND (2013) for FOXTEL and Matchbox/NBC Universal (the miniseries was awarded Best Mini-Series at the 2015 AACTA awards and screened at Series Mania in France and Sydney Film Festival); THE KETTERING INCIDENT (2014) for Porchlight Films / FOXTEL/Amazon Prime; A PLACE TO CALL HOME (2016) for Foxtel; GLITCH (2017) Foxtel/Netflix; HARROW (2017) for Hoodlum Productions/ABC Australia/ABC Studios International ; set up director on SECRET CITY series 2 (2018) for Matchbox/ Foxtel/Netflix (Tony was nominated for Best Direction in a TV or SVOD Drama by Australian Director’s Guild); FIREBITE (2021) for See-Saw Films/AMC and all 6 episodes of SIGNIFICANT OTHERS (2022) for Fremantle/ABC. Tony also directed episodes of READY FOR THIS? (2015) an indigenous TV series for ABC 3 produced by Blackfella Films; THE SURGEON (2005) for Southern Star/Channel Ten; CITY HOMICIDE (2007) Channel Seven and ALL SAINTS (2006) for Channel Seven. In 2007 Tony was awarded Best Director from the Australian Director’s Guild for an episode of ALL SAINTS.
In 2012 Tony directed the feature film DEAD EUROPE based on the award winning book by Christos Tsiolkas. The film was produced by See Saw Films and had its international premiere at the Toronto Film Festival and has screened at many other festivals including London, Sydney, Melbourne, and Thessaloniki and in competition at the Istanbul Film Festival. DEAD EUROPE was nominated for Best Film at the Film Critics Circle Awards and received five AACTA nominations.
In 2010 and 2011, Tony wrote and directed the feature length documentary THE TALL MAN for SBS TV based on the best-selling book by Chloe Hooper. THE TALL MAN had its international premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. The film was released theatrically . It was awarded the Walkley Award for Best Long Form Documentary, AWGIE award from the Australian Writer’s Guild for Best Documentary Script, Best Documentary at the ImagineNATIVE Film Festival in Toronto, Best Documentary and the Finders Award at the Australian Directors Guild Awards and was nominated for four AACTA awards.
Tony wrote and directed the critically acclaimed short film JEWBOY which premiered in Un Certain Regard at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival and which went on to screen at many festivals including Sundance. The film won three AFI Awards, the AWGIE Award for Best Original Telemovie as well as the Film Critics Circle Award for Best Australian Short Film. It was released theatrically by Dendy Films.
His short film INTO THE NIGHT (2002) was awarded a Gold Hugo at the Chicago International Film Festival, Best Film Award at the St Tropez Film Festival and was nominated for an AFI Award for Best Short Fiction Film. He followed this with a short suburban thriller entitled UNIT#52, which premiered in ‘Directors Fortnight’ at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.
